Simple, American fiction is stupid because Americans are stupid.

Their superficial, vapid monoculture let them intellectually atrophy to the point of barbarism, thus explaining why they're so prone to dumb/savage acts like forging evidence to justify wars/genocidal campaigns, instilling a strong anti-science stance into school children and enacting deficient legislation that crashes the world economy.

You wrote "Some writer guy once said that you need to write a million words to get the knack of writing a good story. " The "some guy" in question was Ray Bradbury. He schooled himself in becoming a writer by writing 1,000 words per day. By my estimation, the time it took for him to become a steadily selling writer, shows it took him a lot more than one million words. Similar to the rule of ten thousand hours, practise any craft, trade or occupation for ten thousand years and you will become proficient at it. So keep writing and good luck!

[...] Stephen is one of the good people who strives to put science in his science fiction, and he recently released an e-book co-authored by Bradley Beaulieu. “It features giant solar mining platforms, skimmer racing through tunnels of fire, and a dangers rebellion.” For more information, and for old-fashioned adventuring on the surface of the sun, go browse in this direction.
Interesting project. I was thinking of keeping that pace when I next approach a bout of short fiction writing; at present I'm working on my first novel so that's taking priority. Maybe sometime in the latter half of 2012?

I haven't read any of Martin's novel-length work yet; good post. And I enjoyed your story in TRIANGULATION. Consider this your official invitation: Write1Sub1 Reloaded

Yep, A Game of Thrones is the first book in the series. Have you not seen the HBO series? This excerpt is indeed from the prologue, where we learn that ancient evil is stirring beyond The Wall.

Glad you're enjoying these posts.

Was this the first one, Stephen? It's part of the prologue right? Where they fight the ice-monster-beastie-man? I thought that the prologue was pretty exciting, I kept expecting more of that type of stuff to happen throughout the book.

I don't mind dialogue as a opener. I think this one sets up an ominous tone.

I'm enjoying this series, by the way. Carry on.

one of my most favourite novels ever... Reynolds pets the pace with a 'razorstorm' and it's hard to do anything else but read until the finale. I put this book down with a sigh of relief knowing I could finally go to sleep!

Baxter always captures that very English middle-class quality of emotional constipation in the face of disaster. Too much milk in the tea or total destruction are both approached in the same phlegmatic way . . .
